A little more about the film:
Almost Cut My Hair is a zero budget surf film containing approximately 96% pure surfing coupled with an original sound track worth listening to…The only catch is that everyone involved is riding a surfboard that I built. If you can get past that last bit, I think you’ll get a pretty killer show.

What I’ve attempted to create is my ultimate surf movie; one that I want to watch over and over and over. One that reignites a culture in surfing based on fun, experimentation, hand-built surfboards and an stripped down, open minded approach. Santa Barbara breeds a unique type of surf existence; one soaked in individuality, innovation and the ever important ideal of quality over quantity.

The film features an extremely diverse quiver of contemporary surfboards from single-fin mid lengths to high performance fish variations, 5′ nuggets all the way to the finless freedom of the RabbitsFoot experiment.

When local film maker Tom Contarino came to us about making us part of his new “This is-” short documentary series, we were more than excited to work with him. His eye for visual imagery and creativity is spot on. We shot this piece in one short morning that started in Asbury Park in less than stellar surf, followed by quick visit to our fiends at Cafe Volan and ended with a typical day at Glide.

V Bowls, The Long Lost Friend I Never Knew I Had…

With the amount of mind altering surf craft being created around the world on a daily basis, my mind is often drawn in 1000 directions when it comes to choosing boards for my personal quiver. One thing that has always been a constant for me personally, as well is in the store, is ultra-refined surf craft of Ryan Lovelace. From my first 5’ Velo Sims to my 6’6” Through Hull and others in between, my mind is perpetually blown.

With the success of Ryan’s V Bowls and the fact that he was in town to shape a bunch of boards for the shop, I decided the time was ripe for a V Bows of my very own. After some discussion and debate, we settled on a 7’8” Pintail, and in a flurry of foam dust and planer buzz my new sled was born. After a few weeks of restless anticipation and an extra-special, cool-lavender opaque glass job, we were ready to go.

In some miracle of cosmic proportions, a fun little swell arrived the morning after the new V Bowls was picked up from the glass shop. Not having an extensive amount of experience with modern mid-lengths, I had some preconceived notions of how the board might ride with regards to length and turn-ability. To my surprise and delight, all of my concerns were thrown out within the first wave.

To start, the board paddles like a dream, with the sort of balance you would expect only from the likes of a longboard. Once into the wave, the V Bowls begs you for high, speed lines and blows past the longest of section. And did I mention it turns? As if “super paddle power” and “down-the-line speed” were not enough, the V Bowls turns from the tail like a board more than a foot its junior. The combination left only one thought in my head as I exited the water post first session: Where have you been all my life?
